Introduction
Black History Month starts today (1 Oct) in the UK, and part of the reason I added ‘awareness months, weeks, days’ to my newsletter a few editions ago, was to capture a range of these to ensure we don’t lose sight of what is happening around us. This is an opportunity to reach out and reach across - learn more about difference because I believe that by understanding and appreciating not just difference but also our own cultures, histories and backgrounds and what makes us unique, that we become a greater whole. Some of the days/weeks/months, are intended to be lighthearted, some reflect cultural and historic moments, others reflect particular conditions or disabilities. Each one can be an opportunity to learn so that’s my commitment, coming into October, to use the time to learn, reflect and hopefully, grow by embracing, understanding and acknowledging difference.
Do let me know if you have any suggestions to add to the newsletter. I always welcome feedback/comments and feel free to share with anyone who might be interested. We are at the new academic year, so maybe some new social work students could be interested!
