Introduction
I don’t usually editorialise in these newsletters, and that’s a very explicit choice, partly because the point is just to provide links, and partly on the basis of feedback! But, it’s an unusual week here in the UK, and I feel the need to reflect on the explosion of racism and Islamophobia, particularly on our streets. We know it bubbles under the surface and no amount of ‘anti-racism’ demonstrations, can eliminate this. It has led me to reflect on the role I play in perpetuating both assumptions about those who are different from me - and different from the cultural hegemony within the culture that I have ground up in and how as a society (and society is built on individuals and we are all a part of taking responsibility for it), we both appreciate, understand and learn from different experiences.
As a member of a minority community myself, which is very much built on immigration particularly as refugees, fleeing persecution through many generations, not just the most recent one, I feel a particular personal responsibility to commit to learning, listening and understanding those whose backgrounds, experiences, languages, faces and families are different from mine.
May this be a week where we can each, in our own ways, with our own experiences, think about how we can make a different in building links with communities, individuals, and beliefs that are different from our own.
Have a good week
