Introduction
It may have seemed to be tumultuous week in politics, highlighting hate and division. Last week, reports of heightened levels of antisemitism followed fast by reports this week of heightened levels of islamophobia. Leaders and politicians joining in with both and highlighting what harm division causes to those affected. Language and rhetoric matters. Last week, I went to a steering group of a local interfaith group that I am a member of where we planned our schedule of events for 2024. We came from many different backgrounds and communities but find ourselves sharing the same streets and neighbourhoods, stand together at bus stops and in shops. Do we listen enough to the experiences though that are very different as opposed to assuming because of the voices of leaders, communal and national.
I’m working on this, listening better and looking for voices to listen to, that have experiences that are different to mine because I have to work with it and have to commit myself to constant learning.
My motto for this week is to look for a voice that one might not seek out and see what can be learnt from it.
Have a good week
